Shea Moisture Organic Curl & Style Hair Milk Coconut & HibiscusI am new to the Natural Hair Movement, so I like to think I am unbiased and not so jaded by all the mother nature products floating about. I tried this after my cousin (who is very faddy, might I add) raved about using this brand on her thick, hard to manage natural hair. I have really enjoyed discovering my natural hair texture these past few months, and I’ve noticed my hair forms cute little spirals that I’d quite like to preserve! So I opted for the curl and style milk, and you know, waited for the magic to happen. It didn’t.

Pros:

Honestly, I’m giving it one star because it smells nice and another star because I like the packaging. The ingredients are all natural and hair friendly so it shouldn’t cause any irritation. There was also no product build up which is commendable.

Cons:

It claims to “De-tangle, condition and control curls, while restoring body and shine.” I am yet to see any evidence of this! It is too greasy, if I wanted grease I’d oil my hair up. I get quite apprehensive when de-tangling due to this, as I am very wary of breakage. I cant say it helps with styling because its so greasy I cant do anything with my hair once its on there. My hair is quite soft anyway so I can’t say it conditioned it noticeably either. It certainly gave it a shine, which I wasn’t too pleased about and as for ‘body’, I didn’t think afro hair needed body!

I tend to buy natural hair products from the US on Walgreens, because my aunt has an American card and billing address and hardly anything is available in the UK. It retailed at $9.99, which would be a great price if it actually did something for my hair. Who knows, maybe my hair is too short or too light for me to benefit from this product but I was underwhelmed.

Have you tried this? What did you think?

  1. Haven’t tried this product, but LOVE the curl enhancing smoothie. I have learned that I can’t layer products as my hair doesn’t respond at all. I wash or cow ash, condition, rinse and put the CES on my wet hair, twist, dry and awesomeness for 5-6 days.

  2. I use this as a simple hair milk to refresh dry hair and it works very well for that. I used to use it as a leave in/styler for wet hair until I found out about the curl enhancing smoothie.
I think that this product is all around wonderful, but not everyone should be using it the same way because it doesn’t benefit everyone the same way.
I think the thicker/curlier/drier/kinkier your hair, the more you should opt to use this as a hair milk/moisturizer. Wavy/curly hair could probably detangle and whatnot with this.

  3. I hate the styling milk: greasy and dried my hair badly. I was disapointed by the the pink one except the enhancing smoothie but never mind, there are others product which work well wth my hair especially the yellow one.
